Peru's rich coffee culture is deeply rooted in cooperative structures, particularly for small farms. A prime illustration is Cooperativa Agraria Selva Andina (Selva Andina), an association of 497 dedicated coffee producers located throughout Jean, Cajamarca and in the Amazonas.
Cooperative Activities:
After the initial processing, Selva Andina takes on an essential, yet sometimes understated, role in aiding small-scale producers. They spearhead investments in critical infrastructure, encompassing road enhancements, the establishment of local warehouses, and the meticulous preparation of coffee for export. This coordinated effort ensures traceability and maintains quality control during the post-harvest phase. Selva Andina goes the extra mile by providing comprehensive technical support to farmers. This encompasses guidance spanning from seed selection to coffee processing, and extends to valuable assistance in navigating the certification process. In essence, Selva Andina stands as a stalwart ally for these small farms, nurturing sustainable practices and upholding the highest quality standards from coffee cherry to export.
